WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM?

Eighty-six percent of our water comes from the Trinity River, flowing into Lake Livingston and from the San Jacinto River, feeding into Lake Conroe and Lake Houston.

  • The remaining 14 percent is sourced from deep wells in the Evangeline and Chicot aquifers.
  • The City of Houston has significant ownership stakes, holding 70% of Lake Livingston, Lake Conroe, and Lake Houston, as well as 100% of Lake Houston and a 70% share in the future Allen's Creek Reservoir.
  • Operational and maintenance responsibilities for these lakes are entrusted to various water agencies, including the Trinity River Authority for Lake Livingston, San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) and Coastal Water Authority for Lake Conroe, and Coastal Water Authority for Lake Houston.
  • The Brazos River Authority will manage the future Allen's Creek Reservoir, scheduled for use around 2025.
